Ok, back to normal

Or something approaching normal. The Brood left to go back to Philadelphia this morning. It was a wonderful visit. The last time I saw the babies, they were cute, but they were not yet into BEING cute, know what I mean? Having them all lined up in their carseats, I was playing to a whole audience, not just one kid. The boys are really into rolling and trying to crawl, the girls are really into talking. I spent the weekend trying to get Ella to say her name, but to no avail. She's really good at copying you when you say stuff she already knows...da-da and ma-ma. Geniuses, I tell you! Geniuses!

Sammy has gotten even more adorable too in the past couple of months, if that's possible. He notices EVERYTHING around him and is unafraid to comment. Gotta love almost-3-year-olds.

Here's the glut of adorable pictures:

Knitting History

Things have been pretty bland around here in the way of knitting. No huge mishaps to laugh about, no interesting stories of struggles. Maybe it's because I have a cold. I'm not really finding humor in my successful knitting. But, we press on.

The Antichrist hat is making progress (but not too much). I dedicated myself to it in the first couple of weeks I was home.

However, last weekend Justin and I travelled to visit his grandmother and the Baseball Hall of Fame in New York. I needed a portable project that wasn't going to require 80 million balls of yarn. For some reason, I was craving socks. Do you ever have cravings like that? Not for food, but for projects? Maybe I had been brainwashed by The Harlot's book that I had just finished, but I strongly desired to show myself some lovin by making some handknit socks for me and only me.

I had some really snazzy Koigu in the stash that I'd been thinking would need this amazing pattern in order to do its dye job justice. I had tried several options of ankle-down (starting at the ankle) socks, but found none of them appealing. I used some of it to make a fish ornament for my window, but it's largely stayed at the bottom of the stash for about a year now.

I decided that I needed a new technique to keep my mind occupied, so I'd go with toe-up (starting at the toe) socks and I would use two circular needles. I knew that I would lose a double-pointed needle on the trip and be cursing myself with idle hands for the majority of our 17 or so hours of driving that weekend.

Man, I cannot tell you how happy I am with the results.

I finished one sock just as we were pulling into the south hills of Pittsburgh, but was miffed that the bind-off was still cutting off circulation in my cankles despite how loose I did it. Luckily the pattern even included instructions for and "expanding bind-off" that worked wonderfully! Second sock got a lot of work done this weekend while not holding babies.

Back

Well, sorta. Adjusting to life back at home has been an issue. It's weird going from having a computer 10 feet from your bed in a room where you spend ALL your time to having a computer in the opposite corner of the house in a room that you're rarely in.

I HAVE been knitting and I'll give you the text skinny:

Samwise the Sweater sleeves started.

Antichrist Hat had a burst of work done on it.

Sophie Bags: I can't get the one to felt right, causing me to throw the second one to the bottom of the pile.

A long road trip last weekend facilitated the start of a pair of socks using some brilliantly bright Koigu sock yarn.

Damn, I wish I had time for pictures. Quads are visiting this weekend for the first time. Chaos.

You've all been SO patient

I owe you an entry with lots of pictures of knitting, tons of progress made, perhaps even a new sweater. Not likely.

Finished my final final of the year on Wednesday afternoon. Whoo-hoo! After a brief evening of celebration with my surrogate roomies across the hall, I woke up Thursday morning refreshed and ready to tackle the moment I've been waiting all year for....

The Great Move-Out of Aught-Five

One more, just for effect:

Knitting has, of course, taken a back seat to all of this finals/moving stuff. I know. I what kind of a knitter AM I?

I'm a knitter who, while loading up a shelf full of books, thinks "Oh wow! There's a blog entry right there!" when she comes across this little gem.

Sears Intermediate Knitting. Yes, from the people who change the tires of my car, from the ones who sponsor Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood ("The Sears-Roebuck Cump-nee") comes this wonderful guide to knitting garments that will match your circa 1970's kitchen. Don't forget, it "makes the pattern stitches easy." This lovely shell goes brilliantly with the avocado fridge although the curb-yellow blanket makes things a bit warm on this faux polar bearskin rug.

Oh look! There's an equally entertaining BACK cover! I wonder if the tupperware-orange cardigan comes with directions for an extra long left sleeve like the one that on this model who can get her arm ALL THE WAY AROUND the waist of the other model. That poor woman in the goosepimple shirt. She's trying to keep the smile pasted on her face, but really, if gumby-arms put the moves on me, I'd be a little weirded out too. Maybe the bumps are a defense mechanism of the sweater. That'd be cool!

Driving home tomorrow. Hope to post again by Monday.
