Wednesday, March 9, 2005 Grab Bag I finished Heather and have been working on the Sophie Bag whenever lecture time allows. Knitting in class is accepted, aren't I lucky? Here's a collection of things I've pulled out of the Peace Fleece that I've been using:
Straw Too much information? Sorry. Friday, March 4, 2005 They're like Tribles Ok, the Trekkies will get this. Some of you who are too hip for Star Trek won't. Tribles are these creatures in a Star Trek episode that first appear as cuddly wuddly little fluffballs. Then the crew realized that they multiply exponentially. Soon the entire ship is filled with them, clogging up airways and the critical Warp Core. They got to be quite a distraction. I would have to say that that was the Stitchin Seminarians today. At orientation, I sat there and knit endless garter stitch rows on my green purse. But I was the only one. This cheese stands alone. Ok, so I've been here, what, a little under 6 months now? Today at this boundaries workshop, which had about the same number of people as orientation, there were at least 10 of us...and one crocheter. Not to mention one of the presenters was knitting when she wasn't presenting! I don't know if I should be happy that I unleashed such a trend or upset at no longer being unique. I felt bad for the presenters. I mean, one knitter I could ignore, but there were 5 of us in a row! Did that mean I put my knitting away? HELL no! Waste all that time just sitting there??? Blasphemy! Here's the progress: I worked on BAP for two rows, realized I had somehow not knit some stitches throughout the row, tinked back and just said screw it. Heather on the other hand:
I guess my pace is about an inch an hour. Slow, but still got a lot done. Hope to finish her tonight.
Thursday, March 3, 2005 I miss knitting. Since I got back from Pittsburgh, there hasn't been much time to commit myself the way I'd like. I'd like to be dedicated to one project. I'd like to be able to have the satisfaction of finishing something soon. But I cleaned out the basket today and discovered that I have seven projects underway. Two scarves, three sweaters, one bag, one hat and one of those flower shaped washcloths that I cast on in a moment of startitis and haven't touched since. (Is that average?) None of them are close to being finished in a "wear it" picture way. Tomorrow I have an eight hour boundary workshop. I'm expecting a lot of mimes in boxes. Ba da bing. But seriously, folks, knitting. This will be the first chance to dedicate a serious chunk of time to anything. Here's the problem: Mindless knitting. What project can I take (of the eight) that is fairly mindless so that I can at least pretend to pay attention yet not so mind numbingly boring that I'd rather pay attention than knit? As I went through the basket, I determined that most of my projects don't meet the first criteria. Most of my new projects (Antichrist Hat, clapotis) would require significant time with my head down, looking at a chart or directions or adding stitch markers. I haven't started that much that's easy in awhile. Those older projects that were once mindless are mindless no more: I'm close the end of Samwise the Sweater's front which includes bringing a tape measure to measure when I'm supposed to shape the armholes. That would be embarrassing. I could spend today getting through the major armhole shaping section, leaving the final 6 inches or so for tomorrow, but I wanted to get work and laundry done today. And I would still have to shape the neck at the workshop. A bit of a digression on poor Samwise: he's been sitting in the basket untouched for about a month now. Why? Because I sensed that I was getting close to finishing the front, I knew I was coming close to the armholes, but not sure how close. Then a fellow Stitchin Seminarian borrowed the book that Samwise is in. Silly me, I hadn't made a copy of the pattern for my own personal use. She said she'd return it in a day or two. A whole month later, I got the book back. This is why I'm so tempted to just spend the day on the poor thing. But school comes first. I'm having a similar problem with the Harry Potter sweater. I recovered from the frogging trauma quite well and am about to finish the giant M, but am unsure if I could finish the front at the workshop without directions handy. I don't know how much farther past the M I go before I shape the neck and there's no way I want to do that without directions. If you excuse the uncouth language for a moment: It's kinda like being on a long road trip and having to take a dump. You'd just rather be at your home base when you do it. That does not leave me choiceless, however. I have three projects that are quite monotonous right now: Heather, still 2/3rd's incomplete even though we're into March. The BAP sweater, 6 stitches per inch for a sweater, need I say more? I didn't name it the Big Ass Project for nothing. You need a new picture of BAP. I haven't shown it off for awhile, probably cause it just gets longer and longer. Here. Finally, a newly started Sophie Bag with the Peace Fleece I think I showed you guys earlier. Now, the Sophie Bag is too new. I would feel truly guilty if I took her along tomorrow. She hasn't earned the right to that kind of date with me yet. I'm really fighting the temptation to take her along and just finish her in one day. A one night stand. A hot sweaty fling. No, I'm more of a long-term relationship kinda girl. Heather goes, BAP front goes. We'll see if we can't finish one of them before tomorrow is done. [Archives] Search entries:
